Well it's snowin' over here in Howard County, Maryland. Weathermen are sayin' about 1-3 inches (maybe a two-hour delay tomorrow from school, that would be nice)!!!! It's neat how this year it's been snowin' on many holidays. This year we had a white Valentine's Day, a white St. Patrick's Day, we almost had a white Easter, and now it looks like we are having a white Chanukah (which started yesterday evening at Sundown). I think it looks pretty and I'm definitely happy about any school closings, but I guess the thing is it would be nice to at least have the sidewalks or the streets cleared so that I can get a little run in tomorrow. We'll see. It's a good thing that around now I am sort of in the beginning phase of getting back into solid running shape, just building up my mileage, so I'm grateful that this wintry weather is not dropping my mileage back, since I've been hitting low amounts of miles run-per-week. In fact, I think last week, I do not think I even ran more than twenty miles that week. Yesterday I ran fairly close to 5.5 miles through bikepahts and roads in about 43:03 (I added a little on to this course that is about 5.3 miles that I have been running on periodically for the past several years).
This Saturday I plan to head over to Salisbury (Wicomico County), Maryland for the weekend to see some friends from college before the semester ends over there. On the way, I plan on running in the 5th Annual Jingle Bell Run 5K in the Grasonville/Kent Narrows area of Queen Anne's County, Maryland. Yes, that's right, I've manged to come across another running event in Queen Anne's County, one of the counties in Maryland where, from my experience, it's kinda hard to find year-around running events. I feel so proud. It's on the Cross-Island Trail, the same venue where the Race to Impact 10K was last March (Saturday, March 24, 2007 to be exact); the race after which I got caught up with the idea of running a running event in all of Maryland's counties this year, which, by God's grace I managed to accomplish!
I really surprised myself on the fairly easy Columbia Metric Marathon 5K Run last Sunday in Howard County, Maryland by running a 19:17.77, breaking twenty minutes for 5-kilometers (3.1 miles) for the first time in almost a few months). This Cross Island Trail is even more flat. I hope I'm in good health and that it's not too snowy over there, because maybe I can run a similar (or even faster time there). Before running the 19:17 last Sunday, my goal was to try and get under twenty minutes at this 5K, but now I either need a different goal or just chill and see what happens. Hopefully it works out that I can make it to this 5K race as well as Salisbury for the weekend.
Now onto a more... domestic front. I was baking brownies ealier this evening for a school function/party tomorrow and while doing that I was finishing up reading another fantasy novel. I finished reading Confessor by Terry Goodkind. Confessor is the eleventh and apparently final book in Goodkind's Sword of Truth fantasy series and the third in the Chainfire trilogy. I have been reading Sword of Truth since around the spring of 1999, while I was finishing my ninth grade year of high school. I got into reading it because a lot of the books in the series looked so large (averaging probably about 500-700 pages-a-book in paperback). The second book in the series, The Stone of Tears, was I thnk the longest book int e series, coming in at 982 pages therabouts in paperback. Back in high school, that was the longest book I had ever read. Now, I'm in my second year beyond college. It was a long time, but it was enjoyable. Some of the things that were written in the novels seemed to put the kind of healthy faith that I feel I have in God in a bad light, although I think Goodkind was more antagonizing those who abuse the concept of faith as a justification for terrorism, debauchery and sin. The whole was certainly an intense and entertaining story. As corny as it sounds, I was pretty much on the verge of crying because of the ending (and I think part of it was because it was all coming to an end, after reading the series for so long). Plus, back in the Summer of 2000 when I was out in San Diego (San Diego County), California visiting my relatives with my younger brother, we went to a Terry Goodkind book signing at the University of California San Diego, and I got to meet him in person. It was really cool as his series is right now one of my favorite fantasy series.
That's what's been happening with me lately and that's how the weather is on my neck of the woods, just in case you were wonderin'. Thanks for checkin' up and encouraging me on the running. I hope you all have a good night and stay warm out there!
