All right! This morning I made it to the 31st Annual Columbia Metric Marathon 5K in Howard County. Despite how cold it was, I had a great run and I was grateful that the rain held off for both, the 5K and the actual Metric Marathon runners. The Metric Marathon is a unique distance, 26.2 kilometers (approximately 16.3 miles). I ran the Metric Marathon around this time last year and ran really well. Since I'm workin' on gettin' back into shape, I decided to run the 5K this time around.
And I'm glad I did.
In the fall of 2000 I ran this event, and did the 5K in 20:15. I thought that since I had been able to do a 20:08 on the fairly challenging Tom's Annual 5K Reindeer Run in Prince George's County, it may be reasonable to expect that I could beat 20:15. This morning I felt a little cramped up around my right foot (that area sometimes gets aggravated when I run), and I felt a little cramped up when I got started. Fortunately the good Lord blessed me with sufficient energy and tenacity for this run. It did not take long for me to ease into the run and very soon I slowly started to make my way up through the race. I felt like I held on to a solid pace, I was pleasantly surprised to see myself go through two miles in 12:40 (a mere four seconds slower than the 12:36 I ran at the flat Turkey Trot Two Mile Fun Run in Caroline County, Maryland). That thought sorta motivated me, as I was running almost as fast as I did at that race, only this time it was a split and it was a little more hilly.
The last mile of this race had a couople of decent uphills, but I've definitely had to wrestle with worse. Despite that, I was fortunate enough to be able to cathc up with some other runners who were probably on pace to break twenty minutes, and I figured if maybe I just held on, I could maybe crack twenty, since I had been averaging about 6:20-per-mile (which would probably put me around a 19:40 for a 3.1 mile distance of 5 kilometers). Again God came through and gave me the energy to keep up with these guys and even muscle up the last and probably one of the most challenging hills on the course right by the Howard County Central Library in Columbia. I knew once I topped that hill, it would only be a matter of a couple of minutes before I finished.
There was a fairly steep downhill on the bike paths after this hill, but I was fortunate enough to not be klutzy and fall/roll my ankle or anything like that as I was beginning to build up into a sufficient kick. For the record, I definitely think that this was one of my fastest kicks I've had in a 5K. When I got down to the bike paths that ran alongside the scenic Lake Kittamaqundi, I went through three miles in about 18:47 and I knew if I kept it up, I could probably get well under twenty. I don't feel like I relented at all and I pleasantly surprised myself and came through at 19:17.
For the first time since September, I broke 20 minutes in a 5K, breaking my old best time on the course by about 58 seconds and earning a nice male 20-29 age-group division plaque as well! Needless to say I was really pleased and happy! Even though the 5K course was a little bit different from what I remembered it being back in 2000, the challenge level on it seemed pretty much the same. Also worth noting, I ran the difference between three miles and 5 kilometers in about thirty seconds, and I don't recall a time that I've run that fast at the end of a 5K race. Maybe next time, I'll try to crack thirty seconds for that portion of a race.
I was also pleased that I was able to run a lot faster than the 6:20-per-mile pace I was going at through two miles. 19:17.77 for the 5K is just barely under a 6:13-per-mile pace I think (and that's faster than the 6:18-per-mile pace I was averaging at the Turkey Trot Two Mile Fun Run a couple of weeks back). Also, I have been running consistently for a little over two weeks now sinnce my "off season", so it's nice to be hitting these times. I have not really been doing much in the way of speedwork, just distance runs for the most part and the recent races. Towards the end of this race, I really felt strong for the first time in a while as far as my sprinting/kicking at the end of a race is concerned.
This was a very encouraging experience.
Thank you all for reading. Please enjoy the weekend :)
