I just got back from running in a Bagel Run this morning in the Columbia/Ellicott City areas of Howard County, Maryland. I'm sure you're wondering what a "Bagel Run" is. It's a program of informal group runs through the Howard County Striders (actually anyone of any ability is welcome to participate) that take place at the Wilde Lake Village Center in Columbia. These involve distance runs that typically range anywhere from 6 miles-to-pretty much marathon distance. These are not races, but merely gruop runs. Don't get me wrong, there are runners who do these routes pretty fast and I'm usually not one of them. I like to take it easy and be social for the most part. After finishing the run, runners often hang out and eat at the Bagel Bin in the Wilde Lake Village Center, hence the 'bagel' in "Bagel Run". The runs start right at 7:00 A.M.
This has been a tradition going on since April of 1979, and since then at least one runner has shown up for them despite the weather. On average, about 20-30 runners show up. For more information, please check out: http://www.striders.net/programs/bagelrun/index.html
I don't think I've done one of these in over a year and I was grateful to have the time and a Saturday morning free of a race to show up to one of these. It was cool and it was nice to go at a fairly chill pace and mingle with different runners (many of whom passed me). I ran the eight mile route (well I actually heard it was 8.1 miles) and I felt all right. I made sure I took it easy, because tomorrow morning I plan on running in the Nutcracker 5K run in the Dowell/Solomons area of Calvert County, Maryland (it's more in southern Maryland and it's where I finished out my quest to run in a running event in all of Maryland's counties). I'm probably going to go with my buddy John. I'm lookin' forward to it. I've never done it, and I heard it's low-key and there is actually no registration fee (although donations to the local volunteer fire department are recommended). i'm hoping it does not rain and that I get enough sleep. This evening I plan on heading to my friend Erica's place for a Christmas party, so that may keep me up a bit.
Anyway, back to this morning's run. I felt al right for the most part. I felt like I sorta picked it up towards the end (like maybe within the last couple of miles) and I finished the run in about one hour, three minutes, and fourty two seconds. Not too bad, I think it's been my longet run so far since coming back from my off-season earlier this fall.
Oh yea, speaking of the seasons, today is the first day of winter. What a way to bring it in and enjoy my first full day of winter break. YEAH!
