Happy St. Patrick's Day/That Kelly St. Patrick's Day Shamrock 5K ROCKED!

Hey everyone, happy St.Patrick's Day!!! No drinkin' for me today; I think I'm already wiped enough from the two 5K races I ran last weekend, haha!

I wrote about the st. Patrick's Day 5K in Caroline county, Maryland last Saturday, but not about the Kelly St. Patrick's Day 5K Run in Baltimore City, MD yesterday! That race went pretty well for me as well as for the friends that I went with. We were all happy to finish and to have particpated in such a large race (by far the largest one I have partcipated in this year with thousands of participants) My friend Andy drove, and we were fortunate enough to find a parking garage throughout the crowded and somewhat confusing city streets. We made it to the starting line with time to spare to stetch and warm up a bit. It was neat, I saw some runners I knew from the Howard County Striders, Baltimore area as well as the Maryland Eastern Shore! The weahter was fairly windy, especially towards the middle of hte course, but all-in-all it was pretty good running weather with temperatures probably in the low-to-mid 40's.

The race started on top of a hill and we therefore were running downhil at the start. It did not take us long to reach the inner harbor and go through the first mile on top of a relatively short hill (which I passed through in about 5:34). I fought hard to maintain my pace and form and I felt all right. We continued to run along this road in the city that took us towards the Federal Hill area of Baltimore City. Here, we made a u-turn (which I let slow me town and decrease my momentum, guess I needed the breather, haha). Shortly afterwards I ran by the water stop and managed to snatch a cup of water and take a quick sip or two while running. Soon after, I passed through the second mile in about 11:36 (11:40 according to the woman calling hte splits out, because I had started about four seconds behind the starting line when the race started and I did not start my watch until I got to the starting line). This part got encouraging because runners coming from the other direction before they made the u-turn near Federal Hill were passing by me, and one of them was my friend Allison and another was my friend Andy (who I came with), and both yelled encouragement and I tried to yell back at them (hopefully they heard me). I'm glad I got to hear them there, because at this point in the race, it was pretty windy.

Once I got back tot he Maryland Science Center/Inner Harbor area I began to feel tired and my right foot a bit tender, but I tried to hold on a bit longer. As I ran along the Inner Harbor, I rememberd last June running the Survivor Harbor Three-mile race right around the same area of Baltimore City, and I think that encouraged me a little bit to hang in there.

The course wound to the right (I think this was Pratt Street) for the final long stretch of the race. Like on many parts of this course, there were many people on the sides of the streets yelling and cheering us on. One of them was an avid runner from the Howard County Striders who spotted me and yelled for me to keep it up. That was encouraging, and I knew that the finish line would be coming up pretty soon.

Up ahead I saw the course turning left, and from my memory I knew that was where the PowerPlant Live was (from when I had my five-year high school reunion over there), and I remembered that was where they said the finish line was. I think it was that logic that helped me pick it up and put on a fairly strong kick, and after making that left turn, the finish line was probably less than a hundred yeards ahead and I pushed it all the way through the finish line with a time of 18:33 and a chiptime of 18:28.

All right!!!!

I hit my goal of breaking 18:50 (I wanted to top the 18:55 I ran at the St. Patrick's Day 5K in Denton, MD). It was awesome to have run two races in one weekend, wiht the second being faster than the first. The second one was probably no more challenging then the first, except I think the more dense compeition sorta helped get a stronger effort out of me, and my foot was hardly a bother during this run (at least as far as I remember), so that really helped a lot! I was pretty happy with it. I was glad to have finished in the top 100 in a really competitive and crowded race where the winning time was like 14:44. WOW!!!!

I'm motivated to see that my 5K times are back under a six-minute-per-mile pace. Hopefully this is a sign that I'm picking up momentum again after hurting my foot during the Ten-Mile Club Challenge last month. God-willing, I can continue to improve and train smart and well!

Next race I'm lookin' at doing is actually on Wednesday afternoon (March 19, 2008) in Washington D.C. by the Jefferson Memorial and the F.D.R. Memorial. It's called the Tidal Basin 3K and I heard it's pretty flat. The D.C. Road Runners (http://www.dcroadrunners.org) put on these Tidal Basin 3K races I think every third Wednesday of the month, and I'm grateful that spring break is this week when it coincides with this month's Tidal Basin run. I've heard about them and I'm glad it looks like I may be available to check 'em out.

Thank you all for stopping by and I hope you all stay safe on St. Patrick's Day and enjoy it :)

1st Annual St. Patrick's Day 5K , first Caroline County race this year :)

Greetings! This morning I made it to Denton (Caroline County), Maryland for the First Annual St. Patrick's Day 5K, a run that went through downtown Denton into Martinak State Park a little bit, and then back. It was a mostly flat, out-and-back course that started and ended at the Caroline Human Services Council, Inc. I enjoyed it, especially since the weather was a bit chilly and windy, but great for running. There were some rather gentle-to-moderate rolling hills towards the beginning and the end of the course that went through a shaded suburban neighborhood, and all-in-all it seemed conducive to running a strong 5-kilometer (approximately 3.1-mile) time.

I enjoyed the experience. I saw a few people I knew from other Maryland Eastern Shore running events and I met some new people as well, who seemed to think positively of my endeavors to run in races and running events in every county of Maryland. After the race at a local coffee shop in downtown Denton, I was talking to some other runners in the race and they gave me a "tip" about a 5K occuring at Queen Anne's County High School around Centreville, MD towards the end of the month. I'm hopin' to call up the school next week and see what I can dig up on it. If it's happening, that would be great, 'cause I don't really know of any other actual races occurring in Queen Anne's County until the fall, and even then, those seem a bit tentative. There's the Relay for Life at Kent Island High School in that county scheduled for Saturday, June 7, beginning in the afternoon/early evening I think. However, if I had to choose, I think I would like to do a race (but I may still participate in that Relay for Life anyway, we'll see).

Anyway, back to this race. The race started out all right. It did not take long for the leader to break away from us shortly after I moved up to the front of the pack (which did not take long to leave me huffing and puffing). But I was blessed to maintain what I thought was decent form throughout most of the race. I was pleasantly surprised to have gone through the first mile by Denton Elementary School in about 5:40, which was faster than I intended to go. I wanted to break 19 today and I hoped to maybe go out a bit more conservatively in like the low 6's/upper 5:50's, but I didn't let that get to me much, I just tried to make the best of it and keep trucking. At this point, I was entering familiar territory. If you remember earlier, back in the November of 2007, I had done the Turkey Trot Two-mile Fun Run that started and ended at Denton Elementary School (an event I've done for the past three years), and ran through a good portion of the Martinak State Park. That was where this 5K was going as well, except not as far into Martinak. Needless to say, I felt pretty confident about where I was in the race because I could roughly guage somewhat how much futher I had to go to the turn-around (which I think I hit in really low 9's/really high 8's, I forgot to take a look at my watch around then :)-

After the turnaround, the course wound left off of the roads onto more of a paved trail, which was ice, 'cause it was almost like running cross-country. Those trails lasted for probably a bit less than an 1/8th of a mile, and then it was back to the roads and retracing our steps back to the finish line. I went through two-miles in about 11:48 (faster than my 2005 and 2007 two-mile times of 11:54 and 12:36 respectively at the Turkey Trot Two-Mile Fun Run held in the same area as I mentioned before), and then came through about 2.1 miles in 12:31 (faster than my 2007 Turkey Trot Two-Mile Fun Run). It was somewhere around the 2-mile mark where I began to feel tired and feel my right foot begin to hurt, but not as much as it did during the Road Runners Club of America Ten-Mile Club Challenge last month or the more recent Funny Bunny 5K Run last weekend. God's grace and a lot of recent lifting at Howard Community College's weigh room helped me to hold it together and stay strong through the somewhat long stetch that was going back on 2nd street; a stretch that included a couple of gently rolling hills that we ran over towards the beginning of the race.

After getting up the last small uphill, I soon made the final right turn onto the last stretch where I could see the finish line arch composed mainly of green balloons. Here I could feel myself begin to pick it up. During this stetch, I was able to glance at my watch and see it read 18:22ish, and I looked ahead towards the finsh line that still seemed a far ways off. I thougth taht I would probably run low 19's at best, but I kept pushin' it anyway and as I neared it, I saw the left portion of the rectangular clock reading 18 minutes but the right-hand portion of it that displayed the seconds, so I knew that at any instant, it could change to 19 minutes. I kept pushin' it all the way into the finish line wher I saw the clock read 18:58. YES!!!!

Then, about 2-3 seconds after comin' through the finish line, I lookwed at my watch and saw that it read 18:58, meaning I had probably come through a couple of seconds faster than what the clock displayed. As I cheered other runners on coming into the finish line, I notecied that the clock was a about 3-4 seconds ahead of what my watch said. Therefore, if the clock read 18:58 as my finish time, I probably really ran 18:54/18:55 (probably 18:55) I thought it was an odd discrepancy, because I had pretty much started right near the front, and it had probably only taken me about a half-to-a-full second at the most to cross the starting line, which was when I started my watch. I'm pretty sure that's where I started my watch; perhaps they started the clock a couple of seconds before the race actually started. Ah well, no worries, I still broke 19 minutes like I wanted too, without as much pain as last week's slightly more hilly Funny Bunny 5K Run in Wicomico County, MD.

Another neat accomplishment as a result of this race was that in addition to three other races that currently occur in Caroline County, MD, this was the final race I had to run in order to run in all of Caroline County's four contemporary year-around running races (not including the Tuckahoe Triathlon or the Relay for LIfe that I think occurs around the 4-H Park area) in less than a 12-month period. On Saturday, April 21, 2007 I ran in Adkins Arboretum's Arbor Day Fun Run 10K in Ridgely, Saturday, September 22, 2007 I in the in Caroline Hospice's Remembrances Five-Mile Run in Federalsburg, Saturday, November 17, 2007, I ran in the 22nd Annual Turkey Trot Two-Mile Fun Run in Denton, and hten today I ran this First Annual St. Patrick's Day 5K in Denton. I just think that is really cool to have done all those different races in Caroline County, a county that in my opinion does not have many year-around running events compared to many counties west of the Chesapeake Bay. Now the reason I say "contemporary" races is because I know that there was apparently a Strawberry Festival 5K run or something like that that occurred around the Denton area (I think that was the area), but since that apparently no longer occurs (and I have a feeling there used to be other races in Caroline County that no longer occur). I guess what I'm trying to say is that ll of the races that currently occur in Caroline County, I have been blessed with being able to run and finish them within a year's time period :) However, if there are other races that occur in Caroline County that I have not mentioned, please let me know. I do not mind being challenged on this. However, I would not county those "Jr. Olympic Skills Competition" track & field meets/races that seem to be exclusively for kids/young teens (which, by the way, sounds like a pretty neat program that they have over at North Caroline High School in the Ridgely area).

Tomorrow afternoon I hope to go to Baltimore City, MD with one of my friends and some of his friends for the Kelly St. Patrick's Day Shamrock 5K Run, and God-willing be able to run a faster time than what I ran today, 'cause for one thing I hear that course is pretty much all downhill/flat. We'll see how it goes!

All right, thank you all for reading about my running and what's been on my mind. Thank you all for praying about my foot too; looks like it's been quite effective as God is the best healer :). I hope that you all enjoy the weekend/spring break :)

A couple more upcoming races around St. Patrick's Day!

Hey there everyone. Just thought I'd let you all know that this weekend (which is the beginning of spring break for us in the Howard County Public School System as well as with many other school systems and colleges), I am planning on running a couple of 5K's, God-willing.

First I plan on going to Caroline County, Maryland for the inaugural St. Patrick's Day 5K Race in Denton, MD at 10:00 A.M on Saturday, March 15. This is through the Seashore Striders (http://www.seashorestriders.com/races/index.htm) This will be cool, as Caroline County does not seem to have a lot of year-around running events; I'm glad they are putting a new one in. I hope to make it back out to the Maryland Eastern Shore for this one.

Then, on Sunday, March 16, my friend Andy and I (and possibly some of his friends) are planning on doing the Kelly's Shamrock 5K Run in Baltimore City, Maryland (and it's schedled for around 1:15 P.M. in the afternoon). I've heard that this is quite a crowded and competitive race, and that a lot of it is flat and downhill, so perhaps I can run a good time here. Charm City Run (http://www.charmcityrun.com) is putting this on, but unfortunately the limit has been reached on participants. I'm grateful that Andy and I registered earlier on. I hope that my right foot among other things do not act up this weekend, and that another weekend of two races does not do me in. Fortunately last weekend I ran two races in one day and then went for an easy run followed by a game of capture-the-flag at night, and two days later I was running some strong quarter-mile repeats on the track and I'm doing all right, so we'll see. I hope to not get too far ahead of msyelf or more importantly, God!

All right, maybe I'll see some of you at the races this weekend that I will hoepfully make, and if any of you are there, I look forward to seeing you! Have a good night out there!

Camera problems/nice time last weekend though!

Hey there everyone! I had a great time with my friends visiting Salisbury University on the Maryland Eastern Shore, where I went to college. I saw a lot of friends from school and from when I went to church over there too; we had a great time going out to eat, hanging out, and even playing a bit of capture the flag last Saturday, when it was quite nippy with rough winds.

Unfortunately, as you've probably noticed, there are not any photos up here as usual, and that's because I think my camera has broken. I don't know what happened to it. All I know is is that when I got to the Mid-Shore Family YMCA in Salisbury (Wicomico County), Maryland for the Funny Bunny 5K Run, I got my camera out to take some photos of the area, but unfortuantely it sowed a messed up screen. I know it was sprinkling a little bit out, but I don't think water could have messed it up, as it was inside its case and in a duffle bag (which has had no apparent damaging affects on the camera in the past). When I tried to use the digital camera, it just showed a fractured-sorta looking screen. It was as if the internal system of it was scrambled. Ah man, what do I know. I really hope there's some way to get it fixed; my folks gave it to me as a graduation present when I graduated from Salisbury University almost two years ago.

Well enough of my gripin'! At least I was able to buy a relatively cheap disposable camera from a convenience store on the way to the North Easton Sportsplex in Easton (Talbot County), MD for the Talbot Kids Fun Run put on by the YMCA of Talbot County in Easton. I just have to wait I guess to finish out the camera, get the photos developed, get 'em scanned, and then get 'em up on the 'net. A longer process, but hey, better than nothing!

And now for the two races I ran last Saturday (March 8, 2008). First I ran the Funny Bunny 5K. That went all right. The week before last week, I did not run much because my right foot was hurting, so I was pleasantly surprised to go through the first mile in about 5:47 with relative ease. After that I went down the hill outside of the Salisbury Zoo in the Salisbury City Park. From there, we did a loop around a portion of the park near where I ran hillls with the team when I ran cross country for Salisbury University, and the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center where the commencement ceremony was when I was blessed to graduate from Salisbury University. There were a couple of short and steady uphills around this middle portion of the race, in addition to a well-staffed water stop.

I was starting to get tired around this middle area of the course, and I know I slowed quite a bit when I through the two-mile mark in about 12:15 (I must have really slowed, 'cause I went through the first mile in 5:47). I tried to maintain. I was pretty confident that I was holdin' down second place pretty nicely. I was also beginning to gain on the younger gentleman in first place as well as the pace biker, but as I tried to pick it up to catch up to them, I felt the inflammation-like pain in my right foot (much similar to what i felt in my last race, the Road Runners Club of America Ten-Mile Club Challenge in Howard County), and I felt that begin to slow me mentally and physically. Before I knew it the lead runner and the pace biker had opened up a larger gap ahead of me, but the Good Lord was keeping me going and before I knew it I was within a few minutes of the finish line. I ran up the hill near the Salisbury Zoo that we had run down after the first mile of the race, and I felt all right. One thing about that race is knowing you have that fairly long and steep hill towards the end of it, and having to pace yourself accordingly (and who knows if I've ever paced msyelf "accordingly" when I've done this race). I guess I didn't do too bad considering my foot was hurting. I managed to get through the third mile in 18:56 (almost 30 seconds slower than my three-mile split of about 18:28 at the Ten-Mile Club Challenge a couple of weeks back, but oh well), and then finish up fairly strong in 19:35 (according to my watch, surprisingly the official clock read about 19:32, and that's surprising, 'cause normally if there was a discrepancy in finishing times, the clock would usually give the slower time, becauseit would start before I would reach the strating line where I would start my watch if I started back in the pack). I guess I'll take that time as a decent race considering I was hruting and I had taken about a week off. I'm also glad for the young gentleman who won the race, I think he had run one of his best 5K times to date! That was really cool! I also ended up finishing second and winning my age-group division of 20-29-year-old males (I think that was the age range there). The race had ended and we had gotten under the pavilion just as the heavy rains started. PHEW!!!!!

So I felt all right about my race, but not about my right foot. I was disappointed to have been feeling pain, even after running a 5-kilometer time for myself that is relatively slower than a lot of other times in that distance I have been turning out over the past several years. That kinda discouraged me a bit. I stretched and cooled down, contemplating taking some serious time off of running in the next week or so, and maybe seeing where I'm at in late April/early May. If I did that, I could probably still run at least one race or running event in every county of Maryland, Delaware, and the Delmarva Peninsula this year so long as things work out according to the race schedules. The important thing is that I treat my body well, and if running/training/racing at this point is not what I should be doing, then so be it, 'cause I want to make some healthy decisions, and not abuse the gifts and joys of running that God has blessed me with. Running is something I would like to keep up for a long time (no surprise there, huh).

Well the next race of the day sorta lifted my mood a bit about my foot....

The next race I ran in that day was the Talbot Kids Fun Run (a three-mile race for ages seven and up with a one-mile run for children about 4-6 years of age in addition to parents/guardians of the children) in Easton, MD. Despite the race name, there were other fit adults who showed up to run in the three-mile (and possibly in the one-mile as well) I've heard of the Easton-Clayton Rail Trail (referred to as the "Rails-to-Trails" by locals), and this was the first time I ran on it. As you can tell, I'm usually quite grateful to run in new areas when the opportunities present themselves. When I got to the North Easton Sportsplex/("North Easton Park" as it was referred to on the event application I think), it was raining, and it rained off-and-on before the event. Fortunately the YMCA of Talbot County team was hardy and dedicated about it, as well as the participants (including the kids). There was one part of this event where they would award the top-three-to-four males and females based on their St. Patrick's Day costumes. Before the race I changed into some green gym/running shorts as well as the nice green dry-fit t-shirt I got last sumemr as a result of particpating in the Rembrances Five-Mile Run in Federalsburg (Caroline County), MD last September. Plus, I wore my green "Robin Hood-ish" cap (now feather-less) that I bought at the Maryland Renaissance festival about a year-and-a-half ago, so minus my shoes, socks, and white long-sleeved shirt I wore underneath my green t-shirt, I thought I had a nice green ensemble goin' and that I might possible earn an award for that...

... The kids smoked me in that competition...

Ah well, it was fun running in my cap and in green, haha! The only other time I recall running in that cap was in the November of 2006 when I ran in the Men in Kilts 5K Run in Timonium (Baltimore County), MD. I decided to try running in a kilt and in addition, some medieval garb I picked up at the Maryland Renaissance Festival including the cap, and as a result I had won the "best-dressed/costume" prize. But enough bragging, I think I've gotten off topic.

I got to the starting line (which was right on the shaded and paved path where the one-mile course also started and ended) and just thought to build into it and see what happens, so as not to aggravate my right foot (within which the inflammation and pain had subsided a little bit after the Funny Bunny 5K Run). I figured that maybe I could proably still break 20 minutes for the three-miles, and maybe come close to the 18:56 three-mile split from earlier in the morning's 5K race.

Just before the race started, I realized that my wristwatch was still in stopwatch mode from the race earlier in the morning,a nd the race started as I was foolin' with my wristwatch, trying to reset the stopwatch mode so I could time myself ('cause I knew that this race was not being timed). However, I jsut seemed to mess it up and just decided to suck it up and run it without worrying about my time. Later on I realized I had set the actual time of day on my watch, which actually was fine 'cause that night we had to "spring-ahead" an hour for daylight-savings time.

Once the race started, my buddy Darryl (who I've seen at some of the Maryland Eastern Shore races over the past few years) and I worked to get around the kids (I think that both the one and three-mile races started simultaneously) and moved up to the lead. I'd say within a quarter-mile or so of the start/finish line, there was a neighborhood street to cross, and by the time I got there, I was blessed enough to have taken the lead and I held onto it throughout the race!

I can't remember if it was raining, but I know if it was it was certainly not coming down hard. I thought at this point of the day, the weather felt pretty nice. Maybe it was that or something about how the shaded and straight Easton Rails-to-Trails reminded me of the "Columbia bike-path system" back in Howard County that I do a lot of my running on (except the bike paths back around the home front have a lot more hills and turns too), but something made me go out quick. For some reason that did not bother me too much, 'cause my foot was feeling fine. I had no idea where I was at in the race, because I was not timing myself and there were not any apparent mile markers (although it seemed that every quarter-mile was marked on the trail, but that was not relevant to how far I was in the race, as the race started in the middle of the trail. I got to the turn-around point just before teh second neighborhood street crossing (which seemed a little bit early for an out-and-back, three-mile course, but again, I was not timing myself.

Shortly after the turnaround, I began to feel tired in my legs, no doubt from the race earlier in the morning as well as probably going out fast. God helped me maintain. Towards the end of the race, I started passing runners/walkers in the one-mile race, and for the most part had an easy time dodging around them. Looking back I think it was cool that so many young kids were running/walking a mile. When I was that age, I doubt I was anywhere near fit enough to run half-a-mile without stoppin', much less walk one without gettin' tired, haha! Praise the Good Lord for helping me in that transformation!

When I saw the intersection we crossed near the beginning of the race, and I knew I was close to finishing, probably wihtin a couple of minutes of it. Keeping that in mind, I ran really hard towards and through the finish line area. Once I finished and caught my breath, I asked if any of them had gotten my time, and of course since no one had decided to officially time the event, no one seemed to have my time. Fortunately, the gentleman who finished third (whom I think I was at least two mnutes ahead of), said he had timed himself and ran 16:57, and then my buddy Darryl who finished next said he ran about 17:30. From there I could extrapolate that I probably ran low-to-mid 14's for a distance that the three of us easily agreed was much shorter than the advertised three-mile distance (the gentleman who finished third said I porbably ran around the 14:30's or something like that). I don't even think it was even 2.5 miles (although I could have been going that strong, 'cause I'm pretty confident I was under or pretty close to breaking a six-minute-per-mile pace at the beginning). Plus, I do believe that my best time for three miles is about 17:05 from several years ago in cross country while running for S.U. and I don't think I was running that strongly. But hey, it was still fun and I enjoyed running on the Easton "Rails-to-Trails", and God-willing, and I hope to run three-miles under 15 minutes en route to a sub-five-minute-per-mile pace 5K in the future. Who knows, it could happen at this very event if it was actually measured out to a three-mile course. I could see myself running PR's on that venue given better health circumstances with my body! And on that note, I'm glad to say that I do not recall feeling any of the pains I felt in my right foot like I did earlier in the day with the first race. I wonder if that race served as a warm-up for this one, because at the Talbot Kids Fun Run I'm confident that I ran about as fast or possibly even faster than I did this morning. If that's the case that is really awesome; improving throughout the day, just like how my quality of races seemed to imporve throughout the indoor track & field meets that I ran back in late January and early February this year. Plus, this is the first time that I can recall running two road races in one day where I actually won the second one :) Soon after this race, the races had let up (at least from the Easton-to-Salisbury areas) on the Maryland Eastern Shore,a nd the sun had come out for a little bit before it got real windy (and believe it or not, I played capture-the-flag on campus at Salisbury University that night with some people from Campus Crusade for Christ, and on-campus ministry I was involved with for a majority of time as a student at S.U. :)

Well racing-wise, I'm happy! I got to do races in both Talbot and Wicomico Counties on the Maryland Eastern Shore, and I finished as one of the top runners in both. Plus, I'm hoping to soon post the results of/give a little synopsis of the Funny Bunny 5K Run on http://runinwicomicocountymd.blogspot.com one of the blogs I use through my Blogspot.Com account to give coverage too/display results of running events that do not typically get coverage/have their results displayed on the internet. In addition, I hope to have mention of some top-finishers at the Talbot Kids Fun Run on http://runintalbotcountymd.blogspot.com in the near future. Of course, I won't have much in the way of finishing times outside of what individuals told me about their finishing positions and finshing times that they got as a result of timing themselves. I have premission from authorities of both events, and I hope that sometime I can get photos developed from the Talbot Kids Fun Run and have them come out decent and post them with my coverage of that event.

Just wish my foot would feel better and not act up. At least it did not seem to bother me during the second race on Saturday nor even during capture-the-flag for that matter. It has not been giving me too much grief this week with running. I'm praying about it and if you could pray for me too if you think of it, that would definitely be appreciated. I hope to have clarity on whether or not I should take some more time off, and that no matter what happens, I can glorify God with my running and my attempts to run in a running event in every county of Maryland, Delaware, and the Delmarva Peninsula this year (even if I have to take some more time off). I felt like about a month ago, when I was starting to turn out some strong times at the indoor track & field meets, and then barely breaking 18 minutes at the Valentine's Day 5K Run in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, I thought I was really getting to a good part of this season of running, but now it looks like I'm experiencing another set-back.... Of course, I'm waiting for what God may do, He always has a way of "blowing my mind" over something positive when I'm not expecting it or I don't feel like I deserve it... That's grace for you :)

Thank you all for reading this rather lengthy post, and I appreciate it in advance for any prayers you lift up on my behalf. I hope everything has been going well for all of you. Please do keep in touch, and let me know how your running/racing is going/if there is anything I can pray for on your behalf/or if you just want to say "hi".

God bless you all and have a good night :)

Back to running this week!

After a little over a week off because of my hurting right foot from the other weekend's ten-miler in Howard county, Maryland, I started back running today. I ran about 3.5 miles (a good portion of it was on the Hammond High School track in Columbia). The track is about 3/4's of a mile from where I start this route, and about 3/4's of a mile back to the start from the track, so I ran to the track, ran eight laps (which is 3,200 meters, which I covered in about 13:32 on the track, with the first 1,600 meters being about 6:39), and then ran back from the track. This whole run took me about 24:11, which would be under a seven-minute-per-mile pace. That's not bad at all. If elt like I was running at a lower-to-mid 6:40ish-per-mile pace, but towards the end I slowed while crossing a couple of busy roads. My right foot felt a little tender at some parts of the run, but it's a lot better than how much it was hurting during the recent Road Runners Club of America Ten-Mile Club Challenge the other weekend.

I'm hopin' to keep up the consistent running and stay away from those longer races... At least for a while. Not that I have anything against them, it's just from a lot of past and current experience that I seem to get hurt/injured from them, and for me it's not worth it right now. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why I have been running for over ten years and still have yet to run a marathon... And I'm not ashamed of that. God-willing, one day I would really like to at least do one and finish it!!

My next planned races are on the Maryland Eastern Shore this coming weekend when I go to visit friends from Salisbury University in Salisbury (Wicomico County), Maryland. On Saturday, March 8, 2008 I plan on running in the Mid-Shore Delmarva Family YMCA's Funny Bunny 5K a around 9:15 in the morning that runs through Salisbury's City Park. I ran that race two years ago and did fairly well there. It actually had a fairly challenging hill that runners would go down at around the first mile and then come back up towards the end (and that's fairly uncommon as that area of Maryland does not have very many hills). I ran 18:45 there, and at first I wanted to get under 18, but now since I took a little bit of time off, I don't even know if it would be reaonable to try and beat my best time of 18:45 on that course. I'll just have to see what happens, God-willing I hope I run well. If anyone is interested in the event, please check out: http://www.middelmarvaymca.org/Mid-Shore%20Branch%20Special%20Events%20Test%20Page.html

Then, at around one in the afternoon on Saturday, March 8, the Talbot County YMCA in Easton, Maryland is having their Talbot Kids Fun Run, a three-mile run taking place in North Park in Easton. I have not run this one before, but I heard about it last year just after I thought of pursuing my Maryland-wide running endeavor and sorta mentally kicking myself that I had missed an opportunity to get a running event in Talbot County in, one of the more challenging counties as far as finding year-around running events goes. As long as I feel all right after the Funny Bunny 5K, I'll make it over to this one and see what happens with that. If anyone is interested in this event, check out Talbot County's YMCA's internet page on it at: http://www.talbotymca.org/easton/youthfamily.html Then, click on the "Talbot Kids Fun Run" option and they'll give you details about it. When I called over there, they said you have to register at the YMCA in person, 'cause apparently you can't rgister online, so I'd say try and get to the YMA at around 12ish/12:15ish so you have time to register, get to North Park (which is apparently nearby), and then stretch/warmup.

All right, thank you for checkin' in! I'm gonna get going on some school work here. I hope you all have a good night and continue to have a blessed week :)
