Well I was blessed enough to be able to make it to Hereford High School on Saturday morning (September 29,2007) and find a parking spot along York Road right near the school in Parkton (Baltimore County), Maryland! I ran in the Reunion Run (all-comer's 3-mile race) on the Maryland State Cross Country Championships course at Hereford High School as part of the Bull Run High School Cross Country Invitational. My best time on the course is still 19:18 from the fall of 2000, and I tried to run that today, but I did not quite hit it this time around. I went through the first mile in about 6:06, but then my second mile slowed to about a 7:03, because I went through the second mile in 13:09, then finished in 19:41 for the whole 3-mile course. 19:41 is my third-best time on the course I do believe, and I'm glad I got to run on Hereford High School's course, because I had not run on it in about six years!
Pains in my right foot and in my right knee were bothering me and I felt like they were slowing me up a bit. It probably did not help that some of the surface was a little sandy or slippery on the mostly grassy course, because it caused my stride and form to break a little bit, and I guess I lost balance enough to reaggravate pain in those sensitive areas in my body where I have been having those aches and pains in some of my runs and races during the past month or so.
Well fortunately now I have decided to take some time off. As I mentioned before I do not plan on running consistently again until maybe sometime in November. In the mean time, I hope to spend time at my relatively new job at the Homewood Center in Howard County, Maryland as well as maybe some cross training/weight-lifting exercises every now and then. I would also like to dedicate some time to my writing/revising, especially with making progress on my journals on my endeavor to run in a running event in every county of Maryland this year. God-willing, maybe those journals could be published. It's already a promising start that newspapers I have talked to seem interested on running stories about my Maryland-wide running this year :) During this "off-season" I may hop in a few road races that seem really interesting and just probably take it easy in them and enjoy the atmosphere/scenery. Of course I may go for sporadic jogs of probably no more than two-to-three miles during the next month. I think my body would appreciate the this "off season" of hardly any running.
Yesterday morning (Sunday, September 30, 2007) I went for a nice easy run of about 33:35. I predict I covered around three miles, maybe a bit more. I slowed down a bit to jog along someone I knew as he walked his dog, and since it was an easy "recovery" run from running the Reunion Run the day before, I figured it would not really negatively affect me if I jogged and chatted. Besides it seemed like a nice way to wind down to a break from running/racing.
And that was the last time I went running. I am going to miss going to races and running consistently, but I'd say after running in over sixty race so far this year (and of course running in races in all of Delaware's and Maryland's Counties, not to mention some in Baltimore City, Maryland, San Diego, California, and Washington D.C.) a break will probably do me good!
I will still update this blog from time-to-time while I am on this "off season", and of course keep the e-mails and such comin', and I'll try to get back to you (I'm usually good about gettin' back to people)! I hope you all have a great week coming up and God bless you all :)
