Made it through the "Scrubs Race"

Just a quick post that this afternoon (Thursday, October 30, 2008) I went to Centennial High School in Howard County, Maryland after I got off of work to watch the Maryland Public Schools HIgh School Cross Country Regional Championships (for the 2A South and 3A East Regional Championships) I ran in hte "Scrubs Race" which is an all-comers race that the junior varsity runners on each team and anyone else is welcome to participate in on the challenging Centennial High School 5K cross country course.

I wanted to beat my best time from my senior year of high school; 19:07.01. However, I struggled pretty much through a lot of the race. When the race started, a lot of us bottlenecked through this fairly narrow opening out of the school's sports stadium and the course took us on a fairly narrow grassy section for about the first half-mile or so until it finally opened up. I went out pretty conservatively, and I got that all right, because I spent a good portion of the first mile jockeying to move up a little bit so I can have enough space to go out at a pace fast enough to go under 19 minutes (which is about 6:07-per-mile or faster). Well, when I finally got enough space to pick up the pace, I was almost through the first mile, which I got through in 6:18. I realized I really needed to pick up the pace from there, but I was already fairly tired out and once I got to the many hils in the middle of the course (including a couple of really steep uphills), I definitely slowed.

I went through two miles in about 12:52 and then slowed a bit more off of that pace to finish the approximately 3.1-mile distance in 20:16; one of my slowest races yet! As I was coming into the finish, I wondered how I had run low 19's on that course when I was in high school (and the way I've been running lately, I'd say I've pretty much been runnign stronger than I was in high school cross country). Still, I'm fnate that I got through all right and for as tired as I was feeling, the Good Lord helped me have a strong kick and finish just ahead of a group of high school-aged runners who were gaining on me and wh I thought would surely get me at the end.
This course has been changed a bit over the years since I was in high school, and last year when I did this race, it was the first year I had run on this revised course. I ran 21:47 (and this was after a period of inconsistent running and racing), so at least I can say I ran my best time on this course so far. Though, I still think breaking 19 minutes is a realistic goal for me, because even though the course has been changed a bit, its difficulty level has not changed from when I ran in high school! God-willing, in the future I can improve on that time on this course. I've been blessed with two great 5K races this past weekend on the Maryland Eastern Shore (one of which was where I accomplished my goal of running in a running event in every county of Maryland within a half-a-year, and the other was a personal best time for me on a particular course :). I could very well be tuckered out from those too! I gotta remember that every race I run, things aren't always going to go the way I would like for them to go, but that certainly helps one to appreciate it when they do go the way you want them to go or better, all the more!

I also have to remember that last night I didn't sleep as well as I would have liked. There were at least a couple of times I got up in the middle of the night; especially to use the bathroom.

Oh yea, this being Thursday, October 30, 2008, I suspect that this is my ten-year anniversary of having run 19:34 at the Howard County High Schools Cross Country Championships at Howard Community College my freshman year of high school (and the 19:34 was my best time that year for the 5K distance, and even throughout my high school running, I often had trouble competing with it). Just thought I'd mention that.

Thank you all for reading; have a blessed night out there!

Another race in Kent County, Maryland

So the day after my success at running in a running event in every county of Maryland within half-a-year, I found myself heading back across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for another race: The 1st Annual Queen of the Roses 5K Run in Chestertown (Kent County), MD. This is event is put on by TriSportsEvents (http://www.trisportsevents.com) and it is the same course as the Chestertown Tea Party Distance Classic 5K course. Going into this race my best time on this course was about 19:12 from earlier this year on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the 32nd Annual Chestertown Tea Party Distance Classic 5K. I hoped to beat that time and preferably break 19 minutes. My right leg (especially around my knee and foot) were still fairly sore and tender from yesterday's 7th Annual Fall into St. Michaels 5K Run/Walk in Talbot County, and plus I was fairly tired from it, so I knew it would definitely take some work.

This relatively flat out-and-back race started on Cross Street, just outside Wilmer Park (where the finish line was) and after it started it did not take long for me to work my way up to the other front runners. One of the tough things at this point was that going out, we were runnign into the wind. I got up there with them and we continued to push the pace, and then we made a right turn off of Cross Street and I went through the first mile in about 5:37, not at all far behind the gentleman leading the race, but he did extend the lead very soon afterwards. In the middle of this course, there are a couple of steady and lengthy uphills, and upon going up the first of these, I really began to feel exhausted and thought that I had definitely gone out too fast (certainly faster than I was expecting to go, but I hoped that it would at least set me up to beat 19:12.

After huffing and puffing up these hills, I came to the turn-around point towards the end of the road which was roughly the half-way point, and I was at about 9:11 by that point, meaning I was still under a six-minute-per-mile pace.

Well that didn't last too long.

Even though the course went back down the hills that we ran up after the turn-around point, I still slowed quite a bit that second mile (like about 6:22) and I went through two miles in 11:59. I didn't feel like I was going to be getting much faster throughout this run, even though it was pretty much flat from this point at and we had the wind at our backs heading back towards Wilmer Park. There were now two gentlemen a good ways ahead of me, and I knew I would be hard pressed to close the gap, but still I tried to push the pace with what energy I had left from the previous day's 5K in St. Michael's and from the pains that I was feeling in my right leg during this race. Yet, I knew that I could still finish under 19:12 and set a new personal best time on this course, and that's the motivation that helped me kick it in.

Once I saw the orange of the cones in the distance, I knew that the right-hand turn into Wilmer Park was coming up and from there I would be done. Once I made that right turn and bolted down the short hill into the parking lot and through the finish line in 19:03, my personal best time on that course to-date by about nine seconds :)

I was glad taht I was able to come out and run that after being tired from the running and activitiy the day before, while cramping up a bit, and with going out probably much faster than I should have (especially with wind resistance). I'm obviously hoping that if I'm fortunate enough to run a race on this course again in the future, that I break 19 minutes. I'm already hoping to come back to the Chestertown Tea Party Distance Classic and doing the 10-miler, God-willing I'm in sturdy enough shape for it!

It was fun at the after-party and awards ceremony. I earned an age-group award, got some nice photos, and hung out with some of my buddies that I know from the Maryland Eastern Shore area such as Don, Steve, and Susan. The social aspect was as much fun as running the race I thought. I hope that they do this run again, because not only is it for a good cause but if one wanted to run the Chestertown Tea Party Distance Classic 10-miler in May, they would also have an opportunity to run on the 5K course at that event with this event later on in the year.

Even though this was the same morning as the Marine Corps Marathon and 10K in the Arlington (Arlington County), Virginia and Washington D.C. area, this inaugural event drew quite a crowd of well over 300 participants (some of whom were runners and others walkers). I liked it and despite the wind resistance duirng hte first part of the race, I thought the 50-60-degree temperatures made for an excellent day of running!

The next race that I would really like to do well in is actually coming up this Thursday (October 30, 2008) . There is are a couple of high school regional championship cross country meets occurring at Centennial High School on their cross country course in the Ellicott City area of Howard County, MD, not far from where I grew up. I have run this course quite a few times in high school, and it's fairly challenging, but it's not the hardest cross-country course I have run on. In the Howard County Championshipos my senior year of high school I ran about 19:07.69 on that course (it was a Thursday as I recall), and then a week later (which I also think was on a Thursday) we ran that course again at the 2A West (I think we were west back then in the fall of 2001) Regional Championships and I ran milliseconds better in 19:07.01, almost the same time as I had hit on that course the previous week.

They have a "scrubs race" there after all of the varsity teams run in the championship heats. This "scrubs race" is for junior varsity (J.V. or "B-Team") runners to participate in as well as for anyone else including spectators, family members, alumni, coaches, staff, etc.) I ran in the "scrubs race" all four years of high school, and in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade I was on varsity by this time in the season and I ran in the "scrubs race" sort of "for fun" after the varsity race (and that was my first experience running two 5K's in one day, back in the autumn of 1999 :) Since high school I ran in the "scrubs race" once, and that was last year on Thursday, November 1, 2007, when I ran a 21:47 without much running for a whilee. So yea, needless to say I really hope I beat 21:47, but what I'm really hopin' for is to break 19 minutes since I came close a couple of times my senior year of high school. Even though they changed the course around a bit over the years since I was in high school, the course is pretty much the same in difficulty. I think I have a realistic shot at it, God-willing, I don't do anything stupid like make a wrong turn(s), go out to fast, or get hurt. I gotta pace myself well. I know the race is probably not going to be timed nor will they probably keep track of the results, but at least I should have my stopwatch goin' on my wristwatch, soI'm hoping to get my best time-to-date on this course as well.

I'm looking forward to it. It's been pretty windy outside now and I hear they are even calling for a bit of snow over-night or even tomorrow morning. We'll see what happens. I hope none of this negatively affects the regional championships this coming Thursday.

All right, thank you all for reading and for your support. I'm very happy with how this weekend went (especially with the running of course) and I'm hoping these upcoming races go just as well. Have a good night out there!
